Our Top Tips For Styling Success - what you need to know

Choosing a spot to hang a mirror may seem like a simple task, but there are a few things to consider before nailing it in place.

CONSIDER THE REFLECTION

This is a biggie. Before you hammer a hole, take a minute to think about what sits across from it. What will the mirror be reflecting? Bonus points if you have fab furniture, a painting, or an interesting architectural element, as this will give these decor features even more of our attention. But if it is hung across from something a little blah or dear, we say it, unsightly, then that is what you will be showcasing, obviously avoid!

FIND THE RIGHT SIZE, HEIGHT, AND SCALE

Additionally, think about the height and scale of the mirror in relation to the room and furniture. You don't want it to be too low or too high, making it difficult to use or disrupting the flow of the space.

FIND THE PERFECT HANGING HEIGHT

We know we should hang our artwork at eye level. Does this hold for mirrors? Instead of holding fast to a rule, hang our asymmetrical mirror at the appropriate height for the space. Think again about the reflecting qualities we discussed above. Eye level works in many cases, but higher or lower can work depending on the situation.

COMPLIMENT YOUR EXISTING DESIGN STYLE

With oodles of options on the frame front; there is a mirror for every interior style, farmhouse, modern, traditional, classic, you get the drift. From brass to bleached oak, the frame you select adds to your design's look and feel.  Choose a frame to complement other design choices in the room for a cohesive and unified result.

Then there is also the glass itself. Options abound in this department. Adding to the visual interest and relief from mirror mediocrity is colored glass or tinted mirrors. We covet those bronze and smokey gray options like mad as an alternative to traditional glass options. For the bold amongst us, there are even pink and purple options.

HANG IT RIGHT- avoid seven years of bad luck

Not the sexiest of topics, but let's talk hanging hardware. Tempted as you might be to hang your mirror in a jiffy, please, read on.  This handy advice hangs true for any wall-mounted art in your home.

For most of us, our walls are made of drywall.  With a nail, this can hold approx 5-10 pounds of weight. Unfortunately, drywall is brittle, can bend easily, and can even crumble.  When you have a nail holding a heavy item (read mirror), this can start to slide or slope, putting your item in danger of crashing to the ground.  What is the answer to this slippery situation; enter the drywall anchor.

A nifty little product, a drywall anchor, made from plastic or metal, helps distribute the weight of whatever you’re mounting to the wall by expanding into the drywall. There are a couple of different installations for these wonders.  Some, like standard plastic expansion anchors, get hammered into pre-drilled pilot holes, and others, like self-drilling anchors, have a pointy tip and are shaped like a screw to be installed without pre-drilling.  With all that out of the way, let's skip to the good stuff. Take a peek below at our top six styling ideas for mirrors.

Asymmetrical Mirror Styling Ideas - where to use them

With all that out of the way, let's skip to the good stuff. Take a peek below at our top six styling ideas for mirrors.

LEAN ON ME

This one is top of the pops for us.  Casually leaning or even layered and leaning.  This relaxed “it just happened like this feeling” is especially beautiful when used in an entryway, bedroom or behind other furniture such as a couch.

GIVE IT AN ACE POSI

Mirrors make fabulous focal points. Often we see them placed above mantels on dining room buffets and in foyers for a reason.  The flexibility you have with sizes, shapes, and finishes (think gobs of gorgeous woods and metals) give you the freedom to make a serious statement.  it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

OVERSIZE IT

Conquer your fear and consider using a large size, full-length asymmetrical mirror in a small space. Mirrors give the illusion of depth and space to help that small rooms feel larger.

TAKE IT OUTSIDE

Fresh, fun and a breath of fresh air.  Large- scale options make for some unique outdoor eye candy.

ASYMMETRICAL SYMMETRY FOR THE WIN

We are more than a little in love with this idea.  No matchy-matchy his and hers vanity styles for us.  Adding a little drama to the bathroom space, this free-form arrangement seriously strikes a pose when used above the bathroom vanity.

MIRRORED FURNITURE - we vote a solid no

Take a good idea and go a little too far, enter mirrored furniture. This decidedly impractical option more than often makes a room look cluttered when it reflects its surrounding furnishings.  Instead, opt for the subtle and sophisticated reflective qualities of materials such as brass or copper.  You will win style points without all the fingerprints.

An asymmetrical mirror is a creative way to add depth to your design. From creating a conversation piece to adding some gorgeous glowy light, these one-of-a kind rounded shapes can give your space a touch of something extraordinary.
